A Reflection: Digital “Residents” And “Visitors”(#MANG2094)

Reflecting on Topic 1: Digital “Residents” and “Visitors….”

Upon reflection on Topic 1, the concept of  Digital “Residents” and “Visitors” has opened my eyes to see how “netizens” are classified based on their personality, traits and behavioral pattern.

This could be attributed to the fact that I grew up when the computer and the internet were already in existence and was part and parcel of my life.  I saw the net and the computer as convenient and powerful tools to navigate through life. Similarly, I also thought my parents grew up with the same computer and internet and share my experiences. It was only after watching the video by David White on YouTube that it dawned upon me, that seniors like my parents, are not as IT savvy, and expected the younger generation to teach them how to use the web. This shows that the computer and the web were deemed to be new to the older generation.

Based on my classmates blog posts, it has brought me greater insights into the model of Digital “Residents” and “Visitors”

Adelene’s post (https://adeleneteosite.wordpress.com/) dwell at length into who is a resident and who is a visitor

Shafiq’s post (https://theshafiqmazlanblog.wordpress.com) elaborated on the behaviour patterns of the young and older generation. This allowed me to see the possible age groups that fell under the “Resident” category as well as those in the “Visitor” category.

In conclusion, I believe that the concept of Digital “Residents” and “Visitors,” is a simple to understand, yet powerful model and if applied correctly, it can be an effective marketing tool. It can bring about new ways of engaging users online. It can also support and engage the people we work with, thereby creating a differential advantage for the company.

Digital “Residents and Visitors”…(#Mang2049)

Digital Residents and Visitors is a model put forth by David White. It is based on the theory that was founded by Marc Prenskey ,11 years ago.

The idea hinges on 2 groups of personalities. The ‘Visitor’ vs the ‘Resident’ in the digital age and how they conduct themselves online.

The Visitor:

Defined by one who is purpose driven and intentional. He sees the web like a “toolbox”, gets what he needs, “closes the toolbox” and then leaves the web. Its like retrieving a screwdriver from a toolbox to fix a bicycle. The “toolbox” here refers to the web and the screwdriver refers to Google.  Once he gets what he needs, he exits the scene, disappears and leaves no trace of who he is behind. He does not socialise on the web as well.

On the other hand, we have this other group of personality called “The Resident.”

The Resident:

The Resident as the name suggests, extends his presence online
He expresses his thoughts and opinions, updates his life activities online through his Facebook, blog sites. He is a social being online and even wen he exits, his profile is left behind.

The framework:

This model:

  1. Gives us a range of new ways that we can explore and how we can potentially engage users online.
  2. Can be used to map services and platforms online and more importantly how and why such platforms are used.
  3. Can help us support and engage the people we work with.

Conclusion

The Digital Resident and Visitor model represents a continuum as shown below:

As highlighted by David White,  the”resident modes are not necessarily more superior than the visitor modes.” It does not mean that one is not more superior then the other as this type of activity is linked to our persona as we can be a visitor or resident online or a combination of each.

Upon reflection
I would say I am in the middle of the continuum because apart for using the web as a search engine I would be active on social media but access to my Facebook and blogs are selective. I want the best of both worlds. To be on social media platforms yet guarding my privacy to some degree.
